Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve encompasses three major lava fields and sagebrush steppe grasslands. Craters of the Moon is a unique home to lava tubes, tree molds, the deepest known open rifts in the earth, and many species of plants and animals that live nowhere else. NASA astronauts trained at Craters of the Moon to learn how to collect materials in an unfamiliar and harsh environment in the 1960s.
