In 1910, a devastating forest fire ripped through the Pacific Northwest. The Big Burn destroyed about three million acres over two days (August 20-21, 1910) and killed 87 people. It is believed to be the largest forest fire in recorded U.S. history and was the deadliest event for firefighters in the United States until the September 11 attacks.
