1930s postcard of the Tillamook Rock Lighthouse, a lighthouse built on a rocky island one mile west of Tillamook Head, south of Seaside, Oregon.

The construction of the lighthouse was commissioned in 1878 by congress, and began in 1880. The project took more than 500 days to finish because of the difficulty getting materials to the location and the erratic weather conditions. Many Pacific coast storms have battered the lighthouse, shattering lenses and eroding the rock and structures. The lighthouse was decommissioned in 1957 and has since been sold to private owners.
