Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve

Established on May 2, 1924, Craters of the Moon is a National Monument and National Preserve in the Snake River Plain in central Idaho. The park spreads across 618 square miles and preserves three major lava fields and sagebrush grasslands, with the 60 distinct lava flows ranging in age from 15,000 to just 2,000 years.

These postcards, most likely taken just after the monument was established in the early 1920s, show the splatter cones and lava tubes that are still popular landmarks in the monument. A National Geographic article by Robert Limbert was instrumental in garnering national interest in the park.
