Donald C. Lowrie (1910-2000) devoted his professional life to the study of spiders. He earned a B.S. in 1932 from the University of Chicago, and a doctorate in 1942. Lowrie served in the navy during World War II and the Korean War, rising to the rank of lieutenant commander. He taught at the University of Idaho before moving to California State University, where he retired in 1972.

In this photograph from 1951, Dr. Lowrie can be seen with his collection of more than a thousand bottles of spiders, most bottles containing multiple spiders.
